Shop your home for your centerpiece!

No matter how lavish or simple you want your table to be for Thanksgiving... you probably have all you need for the centerpiece or entry table in and around your home!  Just take a look around and pick a favorite object from your shelves or side tables.  It can be a vase, a book, a piece of china, a bowl.

Walk outside and cut a branch or find some greenery, holly berries, camellias, or some bare sticks and bring them in!  If you feel that you need a few new items for your decor, there are many markets and stores that carry what you need (wear your mask!) and you don't have to spend a lot!   Its a special year, so make the best of this memorable Thanksgiving.

How to transform a favorite urn into a glorious centerpiece
See how in my video below:

Key elements to consider for Fall Holiday decorating...a guideline

These suggestions will help you make decorating decisions quickly and decisively!
  • Choose 3 colors – Then choose your items in those colors and hues of those three colors.
  • Focal point- Choose the largest item to sit in the middle or off to one side. A vase, an urn, candle, etc.
  • Layers – Pick two or three items and stack or layer them or group them together.
Picture
  • A pop of color – Select one item that has a brighter color that will make the table “pop”.
  • Texture – Contrast a textured item against something sleek or shiny (like a vase).
  • Height – Add items of varying heights so the eye travels around the piece; choose something tall to bring the eye up high, such as tall flowers or tall candle holders, and fill in with your shorter/smaller items.

Let's set the table!

I have fond memories of helping my mother and grandmother set the table as a child.  But in today's world, many of us are eating at the kitchen bar, or in front of the tv, or at our desk.  Thanksgiving might be one of the few times we completely set the table. Let's "take a moment" and look at three basic table settings - basic, casual, and formal. I've provided diagrams so you can see where to place each plate, napkin and fork.

Can you believe that Thanksgiving is right around the corner? A year ago we would have never predicted the changes we have had to make!  And this year may be a bit different for some of us: our group may be smaller, or we may be staying home instead of traveling, but that is no reason to hold back on decorating our Thanksgiving table!
Take advantage of what I prefer to call a VERY SPECIAL YEAR and embrace the changes, and go all out on your Thanksgiving table!

In this blog post:
  • See my video on arranging a quick centerpiece
  • Read about purple as a Thanksgiving color!
  • Check out my favorite choices of  La-Z-Boy dining room tables
  • Try my favorite recipe that is on my family's table every year.

Have a Happy Thanksgiving!

Purple at Thanksgiving? Absolutely.

Picture
Haven't decided about your table setting? Try something a little surprising and use PURPLE in your Thanksgiving table decorations!  Actually, purple is one of the most common colors for the fall season. Personally, I think that an all purple table would be amazing but, probably too much... but it looks great when combined with warm colors like gold, orange, yellow, cream, white or burgundy. And because purple comes in shades of lavender to deep wine,  there are even more decorations you can try. Get some purple napkins, add some silvered or orange pumpkins and  pick up magnolia leaves and other greenery from your yard.  Combine it with some inexpensive flowers and candles from one of your last minute runs to the grocery store, and you'll have a wonderful , casual centerpiece!

Not sure about using purple? Pops of bright color mingled with green always work!

These bundles are on my Thanksgiving table every year

GREEN BEAN BUNDLES

One of the recipes that we have every Thanksgiving is Green Bean Bundles.  Everyone LOVES these! And I love them because they are easy to prepare the day before and then I pop them into the oven with whatever else is in the oven!  They are very forgiving as far as temp and time and will bring smiles to everyone no matter the age!

INGREDIENTS
Whole green beans
Bacon
Toothpicks
Wishbone Dressing

Picture
DIRECTIONS:
Take fresh or canned whole green beans and wrap into bundles with bacon secured with toothpicks.  You can cut the bacon in half and make smaller ones or use a whole piece for larger portions.  Plan on at least 2 bundles per guest.  Place in a pyrex dish and cover with italian dressing--Wishbone works best but any vinaigrette will do.  Cover and place in frig overnight until ready to cook.  Cook at 350 until bacon is done.  I've cooked them for 30 min up to an hour.  Be sure to remind everyone to remove the toothpicks before eating or they'll be in a for a surprise!

Bring Fall inside!

Picture
Here is a fun decorating "recipe" for your Thanksgiving table! (Scroll down for my favorite food recipe!)
  • Grab your favorite flannel throw
  • Layer it under your runner
  • Bring a garden container inside
  • Fill it with gourds, pumpkins and flowers
  • Walk around your yard or neighborhood and gather twigs and leaves
  • Artfully place them in your chandelier!

Cost?
A little time and your imagination!

How cute is this pumpkin place setting?
Very. Very. Cute.

Use a real or artificial pumpkin and personalize it!  Place it in a bowl with a coordinating napkin.  Such a great idea!

THIS...  is my favorite holiday recipe:

Picture
ROASTED BRUSSELS SPROUTS

INGREDIENTS

3 cups Brussels sprouts ends trimmed, yellow leaves removed
3 tablespoons olive oil
1/4 teaspoon Salt to taste
Roasted Butternut Squash:
1 1/2 lb butternut squash peeled, seeded, and cubed into 1-inch cubes (Yields about 4 cups of uncooked cubed butternut squash)
2 tablespoons olive oil
3 tablespoons maple syrup
½ teaspoon ground cinnamon
Other Ingredients:
2 cups pecan halves
1 cup dried cranberries
2-4 tablespoons maple syrup optional

INSTRUCTIONS
How to roast Brussels Sprouts:
  1. Preheat oven to 400 F.  Lightly grease the foil-lined baking sheet with 1 tablespoon of olive oil.
  2. Trim ends of Brussels sprouts  and remove yellow leaves.
  3. Then, slice all Brussels sprouts in half.
  4. In a medium bowl, combine halved Brussels sprouts, 2 tablespoons of olive oil, salt (to taste), and toss to combine.
  5. Place onto a foil-lined baking sheet, cut side down, and roast in the oven at 400 F for about 20-25 minutes. During the last 5-10 minutes of roasting, turn them over for even browning, the cut sides should be nicely and partially charred but not blackened.

How to roast Butternut Squash:
  1. Preheat oven to 400 F. Lightly grease the foil-lined baking sheet with 1 tablespoon of olive oil.
  2. In a medium bowl, combine cubed butternut squash (peeled and seeded),1 tablespoon of olive oil, maple syrup, and cinnamon, and toss to mix.
  3. Place butternut squash in a single layer on the baking sheet. Bake for 20-25 minutes, turning once half-way through baking, until softened.

How to toast pecans:
  1. Toast pecans in the preheated oven at 350 F
  2. Line a baking sheet with parchment paper.
  3. Toast the pecans for about 5 minutes (maybe a bit longer) in the preheated oven at 350 F until they get darker in color.
Note: pecans burn really fast, so make sure to check the nuts after 5 minutes and frequently afterwords.

TOSS IT ALL TOGETHER! ENJOY!!

Where should these wonderful ideas go? On a La-Z-Boy solid wood dining room table or sideboard, of  course!
