recipe!
When I think of this time of year, all I think of is PUMPKINS!  As we all know, we can turn a pumpkin into a Jack O'Lantern for Halloween.  They are fun to carve and light our porches and steps.  I love to carry them into my Fall decorating for many weeks to come! And don't you love the white and light green spotted pumpkins?  They are perfect for our coastal Fall season!

Halloween has always been a favorite holiday at our house. As a child, I lived out of town on a farm so my mother would have a Halloween carnival in October and invite both adults and children where we bobbed for apples either in a tub of water or hanging from a string -no hands allowed! It was a great time.

When my children were small we had a doormat at the front door that screamed when you stepped on it!  It was a big hit with kids and adults alike.
Picture
Picture
As the children grew up and went off to college, we would have a pumpkin carving contest in October to keep the fun alive!
CUTE IDEA: Pick any simple cookie cutter that you have in your baking set and use a mallet to help drive it through the shell of your pumpkin.  When you're done, consider spray painting the entire thing one color if you want to make it a year-round piece.

MY FAVORITE IDEAS
FOR
HALLOWEEN!

Plus a yummy
Halloween air-fryer recipe!
Picture

 Flying Bat Mantel

Picture
This FLYING BAT MANTEL is a fun way to add Halloween decor to your space in a tasteful way. It makes a statement but will not clash with the existing decor in your space, a neutral and fun idea for both kids and adults! Bend the wings to create a 3D effect as if they are actually flying out of the fireplace, and use a variety of sizes to get the best outcome.

Halloween Porch Decor

Picture
Witches hats hanging from fishing line, jack o'lantern mum pot holders, and cornstalk columns are great easy, fun ways to make your front entrance festive for your trick or treaters! Once Halloween has passed this decor can easily be transitioned into Thanksgiving decor by removing the hats and turning the jack o'lanterns faces around so that the solid side of the pumpkin shows from the front entrance!

Witches Cauldron Centerpiece

Picture
This is a subtle yet festive way to create a centerpiece by placing a floral arrangement into a glass vase of water, and then into a metal witches cauldron! Take it one step further and add candle stick holders with black candles on either side of the arrangement.

Air Fryer Stuffed Bell Pepper Jack O'Lanterns

Picture
  • Ingredients
    • 6 Orange Bell Peppers
    • 1 Lb Ground Beef or Ground Turkey
    • 1 Package Gluten-Free Taco Seasoning
    • 3 Green Onions, Sliced
    • 2 Cups White Rice, Cooked
    • 2 Tbsp Shredded Mexican Cheese
    • Salsa
  • Instructions
  • In a skillet or in the pot of an air-fryer, brown the ground beef and add in the taco seasoning as instructed.
  • Mix in the green onions and cooked rice. Set aside.
  • Spray the air fryer basket with olive oil cooking spray.
  • Cut the top off each bell pepper and clean the inside out.
  • Using a very small sharp knife, carefully carve a pumpkin face in the side of the pepper.
  • Stuff each pepper with the mixture.
  • Place the peppers in the air fryer basket. Leave the top of the pepper off for now. My air fryer basket fits 4 peppers.
  • Cook at 350 degrees for 10 minutes in the air fryer.
  • Open the air fryer, spray each pepper with olive oil cooking spray.
  • Top with cheese and put the top of the pepper back on.
  • Cook for an additional 3-5 minutes or until the cheese melts.
  • Remove and serve.
  • Repeat the steps for the additional 2 peppers if needed.
  • Serve with salsa!

Mix black, brown and cream for a high contrast team of colors in your home.

Think brown and black are dull and boring? Think again! Both definitely have their place in design, and adding cream or white to the combination can lead to having a spectacular room!

You cannot miss with black.

Black definitely makes a statement.  It is bold and beautiful by itself and  is a great accent color, too.  As striking as it is, black can sometimes be too strong in large amounts.  So the thing to do is mix it with other neutrals! And I especially love brown and cream.   Using this color trio in decorating can result in a stunning room.
Picture
Picture
Picture
Black adds drama to your room and takes a neutral room from being a little bit boring to exceedingly beautiful!

Brown is safe and friendly.

Brown is understated. Unlike black, brown doesn’t usually cry for attention and it relates well to many other colors.
Picture
Picture
When decorating with black and brown, choose one to be the dominate color.  Brown is the safer color, but black adds the pizazz and life!  And always choose  neutrals to tie it all together!  I usually choose cream over white because white can sometimes feel too stark when paired with such dark colors. Cream adds warmth because it typically has yellow undertones.

Incorporate light neutrals!

Colors are like humans. Each one has a meaning. Each one conveys different feelings. Each one matters.  How to mix people and how to mix colors is very important to understand because not all colors - or people - work well together!
When artists choose colors harmoniously, spectacular results follow.  It's the same when designing a room!
In my last blog post I explored the secondary colors:  green, orange, and purple.  Let's now look at muted palettes of the same colors and see how we can create fresh hues and new feelings!  So scroll along with me and take a  few steps away from the brighter colors and together let's dive into these soft, gorgeous variations of the secondaries.
Picture

The muted rainbow...

Instead of limiting yourself to two or three colors, choose an assortment of rainbow-inspired hues for your room palette. Darker, muted versions of otherwise bright colors (yellow, pink, orange, blue, etc.) instantly create a cozy, comfortable look.  Plus this color mix is perfect for Fall!  Even brides are loving it!

I'll have
seconds, please!

When something is so good, so satisfying, we want more.  Just like a second serving of your favorite thing to eat, secondary colors please our eyes and fill our heart!
Among many things, secondary colors produce gorgeous rooms.  As a mixed media artist and designer of rooms, I favor the secondary colors because they are just that:
So good, So satisfying!

An Art Lesson

Picture
The three secondary colors often taught and discussed in art classrooms are those based on paint, which is also a subtractive system. Paint uses red, blue, and yellow as the three primary colors and  uses orange, violet, and green as the secondary colors.
When combined,
  • Red and yellow create orange
  • Red and blue create violet or purple
  • Blue and yellow create green
They make a pleasing composition because they are analogous on the color wheel meaning they are next to each other on the secondary scale.

Choosing contrasting colors with
one complimentary color
can be the way to go.

Click here to read my earlier blog on primary colors!
Primary colors are still on my mind! Happy, free, and bright!
I do love the primary colors.

However, using all three together can be a  LITTLE TOO MUCH!
Picture

START WITH TWO
then pick one more.

Start with this guideline:  Use only one or two bright hues at a time. When using red, yellow, and blue together, keep one or two colors in the pure hues and mute down the third by choosing a color that either has a bit more black or white or leans slightly to the right or left of the color wheel.

Create rest for the eye by using alternative colors and textures in the space. When working with a primary scheme, freely add additional colors and textures—try rich woods in the furniture, and pops of color in the flowers! This will provide an outlet for the eye so it doesn’t seem strict.

THE PRIMARY COLORS...COMMON BUT UNIQUE!
Even though we see them everywhere and probably consider them pretty common, the primary colors are actually unique because cannot be made by mixing any other colors.
Picture
They are the base, the foundation of all of the other colors. These three colors are mixed to create all other colors and can be combined with white or black to create shades and variations of these colors. Pretty special!
 (
Mercer, our Pensacola designer,  will be talking about the secondary colors next week!)

Picture

EASY AND INVITING
Primary colors in their true forms are often associated with childhood and a floor covered in toys. Or, perhaps the colors remind of us childhood because a room decorated in the primaries make us feel found and loved
❤️, reminding us of a simpler time.
Picture
But there is no reason they have to be babyish! Primary colors are the colors of modern art and design.  You find them everywhere from comic books to museums.  Primary colors transport us to a happier, sunnier place!

Red can't help it.  Here's how to live with it.

Earlier this week I wrote about the color RED and how this color means business, commands attention, and exudes excitement. However, incorporating red into your home decor is sometimes easier said than done.
Too much red isn’t always right for certain spaces. Too little red won't even make dent in your design.
Fortunately, pairing red with another color (or two!) can bridge the gap between subtle and statement. There are so any options that work with red!  Here is one of my favorite color pairing to help tame this beautiful but commanding  color!

Red, Black, and White: Retro Classic

This classic combination is a great way to work red into a room and give it the attention it demands.  Black and white allows the red to POP!  And it's so easy to create!
